7 Signs Your Car May Have Rust Hiding Underneath

Rust isn't always obvious. By the time you see a large rusty patch on the outside of your vehicle, corrosion may already have developed underneath.

1. Bubbling paint

Small bubbles underneath paint can indicate moisture and corrosion developing below the surface.

2. Brown or orange staining

Rust-coloured marks around joins, wheel arches and panels can be an early warning sign.

3. Flaking metal underneath the vehicle

If metal underneath the vehicle looks flaky, scaly or brittle, it should be inspected.

4. Rust around wheel arches

Wheel arches are regularly exposed to water, dirt and road debris, making them common areas for corrosion.

5. Corrosion around the sills

The sills run along the lower sides of the vehicle and can be particularly important when it comes to structural rust.

6. Rust around previous repairs

Older repairs can sometimes begin to deteriorate, particularly if moisture finds its way underneath coatings or filler.

7. Rust identified during a WOF

Sometimes the first time a vehicle owner becomes aware of corrosion is when it's picked up during a WOF inspection.
